On the 13th of August 2024, Fourways High School had the honour of hosting this year’s Athletics Interhigh. The Germiston stadium stands were filled up by students from all four competing schools, Randpark High School, Queens High School, Fourways High School, and Bryanston High School.
The cheers and dances of each school kickstarted the event. Fourways High School invited the crowd to a cruise into the world of pirates, wearing blue bandanas and sleek eyepatches. And with the help of Mrs Ludick, the cheerleading team and dance squad had the other schools shaking, wowed by their incredible formations, stunts and funky moves.
Throughout the event, enthusiasm, determination, and support vibrated within the Germiston stadium’s stands. Echoes, cheers and drum rolls were heard from all four schools in attempt to secure the Spirit Cup for themselves!
However, the determination to secure the Spirit Cup did not overtake the excitement felt by Fourways High School pupils whenever their fellow pupils slayed the dance moves on the track, or whenever our fellow athletes such as Tshego Kokong neared the finish line, passing other athletes.
However, in the end, Randpark High School shared the last war cry celebrating their triumph in winning the Spirit Trophy.
The competition kicked off with Queens High School and Randpark High School , and with Randpark High School securing the cup in the end. Although Fourways High School did not win the cup, the school left with its own outstanding achievements to take pride in.
Some of these achievements include:
- Madison Butzer – 1st in u17100m and 200m
- Tshego Kokong – 1st in u19 400m
- Zammy Moyo – 1st in u17 800m and 1,5m
- Damian Brice – 2nd in u17 800m
- Zamaswati Kgoatla – 2nd in u19 800m and 1,5m
All the best to these athletes as they head to Prestige! Fourways placed third in the competition, beating its rival, Bryanston High School, with a close 91-90 score.
The Interhigh is an event that puts our support for our school to the test. It unifies the entire school despite our differences, all in the hopes of raising the same school flag high above others. The laughter and excitement give students a break from the classroom environment, and allows interaction among students from other schools.
Therefore, when Uyanda Kubeka, a matric student, was interviewed to share his thoughts about his final Interhigh experience, he expressed how sad he was about this being his last event but also how happy and proud he is to see his fellow schoolmates running, and their dedication to their sport.
It is amazing how this allows one to witness pupils who seldom get along on the school’s premises, linking arms as they shout in unison, putting all their differences aside for a day, for the sake of their school badge.
