A Look Back: Longtime Teacher Reflects on Fourways’ Transformation

Fourways High School has undergone a significant shift in the past two decades, according to Mrs Venisha Subramoney (fondly known to her students as “Supercash”), who arrived on campus in 2004. We sat down with her to discuss her experience and perspective on the school’s evolution.

What was Fourways High School like when you first arrived?

I first arrived at the school 20 years ago. Fourways in 2004 was quite strict with rules, strict with academics and inclusive with gender roles. Now, it has transformed positively to where there is more inclusion of people of different races as well as more diversity amongst the students and the staff.

Did you always believe that our school would progress to the level that it has?

Yes because our progression was almost inevitable. Because our school is an institution of learning, our progression had to accommodate children of different needs and underprivileged backgrounds. Students from the past compared to current students, did not always have these relationships. Such relationships had to be cultivated over time.

Has teaching always been your dream career?

Teaching has always been a dream of mine which has now become my passion. Teaching has made a very positive impact on both myself and the students that I teach/have taught.

What do you think about the recent changes that have been happening within the school?

The recent changes and developments in our school have been good. It indicates that management is actively trying to improve our school and avoid remaining stagnant. For example, councillors did not always have a light blue blazer. Yet this change was beneficial because it distinguishes leaders from the student body without creating a harsh division.

What are a few words of advice you have for the students?

Your youth is the absolute best time of your life, so work tirelessly toward your future. Invest your time and effort into improving yourself where you can and allow the school to assist in transforming you into the very best version of yourself.
