A Reflection on Their Last First Day for the Class of 2026

The first day back at school is always exciting, but for matriculants, it feels different—it is their last “first day.” Many Grade 12 learners experience a mix of emotions, including excitement, sadness, and relief as they begin their final year of high school.

One matric learner, Nsuku Sambo, described her feelings as hard to put into words. She explained that starting matric is both sad and relieving. She also noted that the year already feels serious, as the work began immediately.

Another matriculant, Khanyisa Chai, shared her relief and excitement at reaching the final stretch of her school journey. For her, starting the final year makes the experience feel lighter and more joyful.

Although each matriculant experiences their last first day differently, most agree that it is a significant moment. It marks the beginning of the end of their high school journey and the start of an exciting new chapter beyond school.
