Celebrating the Life of Augusta ‘Ada’ Madu

Augusta ‘Ada’ Madu, a beloved Fourways High Legend, passed away on 26 March 2025 at the age of 15. Her funeral service was held on 4 April 2025.  Ada’s untimely passing has left a lasting mark on the hearts of her family, friends, and Fourways High staff and students.

Ada’s legacy surpasses the classroom walls. She was known as a beacon of light. She brought laughter to the hallways and warmth to every corner of Fourways High School. Mrs Vetmani shared at Ada’s funeral on behalf of her register teacher Miss Dukes: “From the moment she stepped into my class in grade 8 it was clear that she was special. With her big bright eyes and her large smile Augusta knew exactly what she wanted and where she wanted to go in life. She had enthusiasm and confidence that was contagious, a curiosity about the world that was unmatched.”

Ada was an active member of Fourways High. She was a fierce and committed hockey player who her register teacher and hockey coach, Miss Dukes, described as having “true sportsmanship.” Described as a beacon of light, Ada made life brighter for people whether she was lending a helping hand, offering words of encouragement or simply sharing a smile.

Ada was also a loyal friend. She was known for going above and beyond to make everyone feel loved and included. She wanted to make a world a better place for everyone. Nomathemba Mtlomela, a friend of Ada, stated: “I’ve never seen someone who was able to rise above the challenges like Ada [did] and that’s something I’ve always admired about Ada.” Ada had many friends and inspired many including friends and students who were older than her. “Fourways High, actually the world will never see a child like her again,” shared Nomathemba.

Ada shared a close bond with her mother, Kondi Silima. She also survived by her loving siblings, two brothers and two sisters who will forever carry her in their hearts. One of her brothers, Keke Madu who is also a Fourways learner, is committed to honouring the life and wonder that was her sister. Keke and his fellow 1st team rugby teammates honoured Ada with a unique tunnel at the Derby against Krugersdorp High School (KHS). The KHS rugby team knelt with the Fourways High rugby team and joined the rest Fourways High to a moment of silence to honour Ada.

Though Ada may no longer walk the halls of Fourways High School, she will always remain a part of our community. May Augusta Ada Madu rest in peace, and may we strive to live as she did- with kindness, courage and an unwavering spirit.
