On 13 January, just one day before the school year officially began, our Grade 8 learners were welcomed to Fourways High School in the best possible way—through Orientation Day. The purpose of the day was to help them feel comfortable, confident, and ready to take the big step into high school. What could have been a nerve-wracking experience quickly became a day filled with excitement, laughter, and new beginnings.
Starting high school is a significant milestone. Everything feels bigger—from the classrooms to the expectations—and it is completely normal to feel a little overwhelmed. This is exactly why Orientation Day is so important. The councillors took full leadership of the programme, ensuring that every Grade 8 felt seen, included, and supported. From the moment learners arrived, they were greeted with energy and positivity, immediately setting a welcoming tone.
The day began with a special assembly created specifically for the Grade 8s. They were officially welcomed into the Fourways family and introduced to what it truly means to be a “Legend.” Important information was shared, but the assembly was about more than just rules and procedures—it provided reassurance, encouragement, and excitement for the year ahead.
After the assembly, learners were divided into their tribes—Terra, Aqua, Ignus, and Ventus. Within these groups, they had the opportunity to meet fellow Grade 8s and connect with the councillors who would guide and support them throughout the year. This structure helped create smaller communities within the larger school, making the environment feel more personal and less intimidating.
The remainder of the day was filled with icebreakers, team-building activities, and interactive games. Laughter echoed as learners stepped out of their comfort zones, introduced themselves to new people, and collaborated in fun challenges. These activities were thoughtfully designed to encourage confidence and connection. By the end of the day, strangers had become friends, and shy smiles had transformed into confident ones. The positive impact of Orientation was already clear.
The excitement continued on 27 January, when the Grade 8s attended their very own barn dance as part of the Orientation programme, alongside the councillors. This event was exclusively for the Grade 8s, making it even more special. The atmosphere was energetic from the moment the music began. Councillors led a line dance, and soon the entire room was moving together in unison. There was laughter, cheering, and an overwhelming sense of school spirit. It was not just a dance—it was a celebration of the beginning of their high school journey. When it was finally time to leave, it was clear that no one wanted the night to end.
Overall, Orientation had a profound impact. It helped Grade 8 learners begin their first official day of school feeling confident, prepared, and excited. Instead of fear, there was enthusiasm; instead of uncertainty, there was a strong sense of belonging.
