This year, our school welcomed a new addition to the family: Echo, the energetic and lovable mascot! Introduced by Ms. Brown, Echo has quickly become a beloved figure on the grounds of Fourways High, spreading school spirit and enthusiasm wherever he goes.
Echo was born from a desire to create a sense of unity and pride among the pupils of Fourways High School. The inspiration to introduce a mascot to the Fourways community came from a joint idea from Mrs. Ludick and her, which comes from the 2023 Bryanston vs. Fourways Derby. The idea came after seeing the Bryanston High School mascot, Harry, said Ms. Brown.
So, why the name “Echo”? Ms. Brown revealed that choosing the name was a daunting task because it required research. After searching for the names of wolves in Latin and the names of werewolves, Mr. Holliday suddenly said “Echo.” The name was chosen because it represents the echo heard from the Fourways spirit when showing support to your friends and the values echoing from the corridors of the home of Legends. That’s why the name Echo was chosen.
Ms Brown said that, “Echo represents the heartbeat of Fourways High School, from the students to the teachers to the grounds staff. Echo symbolizes the desire to always be excellent and to be inclusive. As a wolf, Echo’s qualities include being family-oriented, because wolves are pack animals, caring, protective, courageous, and full of intuition.”
During the design process, a lot of ideas were considered. The design process was a collaborative effort between Ms. Brown and Mrs. Ludick. Echo was made by a mascot company in Cape Town, which took about two months to make, and the suit was very expensive. “I found the making of Echo to be very interesting because, along with Mr. Holliday, Mrs. Ludick and myself had to keep everything a secret,” said Ms. Brown.
Ms. Brown believes that Echo will have a positive and great impact at Fourways High, fostering a sense of belonging and pride. “Echo’s role in the future is to stay number one and represent the values of Fourways High School. To show that, as a wolf, Echo is here to lead and to show everyone that it is time to have fun,” Ms. Brown explained.
Echo’s debut has been met with excitement and enthusiasm, with students ready to take selfies at sports events. Be sure to say hi and show love to our new furry friend! #arrooooo #howlforyourschool
