Every school has its own customs; however, very few have a character as iconic and enigmatic as Echo. Echo has become an unforgettable part of the school’s spirit, whether he is dancing on the sidelines, entertaining kids, or bringing life to Derby Day. Yet behind the oversized mascot suit are two ordinary students whose identities continue to be a mystery within the walls of Fourways High School.
It is interesting to note that Echo was not always performed by two people. For years, one student carried the responsibility alone until the demands of the role became too great. A second student was later selected to help share the responsibility, making it easier to maintain the mascot’s boundless energy throughout school events.
Neither student actively sought the role. One was noticed during drama lessons by a teacher who recognised their performing abilities, while the other caught the attention of Mr. Clayton during major production rehearsals. From there, they were quietly invited to become the people behind one of the school’s most beloved traditions.
So why agree to become Echo?
For one, it was the opportunity to be part of something much bigger than themselves. The mystery surrounding the mascot and the idea of contributing to school spirit without receiving any personal recognition made the experience especially meaningful. The other simply wanted to see whether they could keep such a significant secret for years.
Keeping that secret, however, has become an art in itself.
The pair have even developed their own code language. Rather than mentioning Echo by name, they casually refer to the mascot as “Lee” or even “the loud sound” whenever they need to discuss plans in public. To anyone listening, it sounds like an ordinary conversation. But to them, it’s another layer of secrecy protecting Echo’s identity.
It comes as no surprise that wearing the suit is far from easy.
The costume becomes incredibly hot, visibility is limited, and excited learners often pull Echo in every direction, each wanting a moment with the school’s favourite mascot. One of the more unexpected challenges comes after the event has ended. Since they sometimes disappear for long periods while performing as Echo, they frequently have to invent believable excuses explaining where they’ve been. Fortunately, a few trusted teachers help create convincing reasons for their sudden disappearances.
The physical performance itself also requires far more preparation than most people would imagine. Because Echo never speaks, every movement has to tell a story. The students even practiced different walks and body language to ensure that they never accidentally acted like themselves. Once the suit is on, they are no longer students; they are Echo.
As their time as Echo eventually comes to an end, they have one piece of advice for whoever inherits the suit next: be energetic, know how to dance, stay committed to the character, and above all, protect the secret.
After all, while everyone knows Echo, very few will ever know the people who gave the mascot its heart.
