Fourways High School, known for its legends in both academics and sports, has recently witnessed the remarkable journey of four talented first-team students to Italy. Ebeneezer Momberume, Tshiamo Sehlapelo, Lukhanyo Hlatshwayo, and Kgaiso Maimane, all part of the Gold City Royals football club, were invited to showcase their football skills at Real Vicenza, a professional club in Italy.
The tour took place last year from 19 August- 3 September. Selected by Gold City Royals, they aimed to impress Real Vicenza and experience international football styles.
Ebeneezer Momberume, one of the budding football stars, shared his insights into this once-in-a-lifetime experience. When asked about the purpose of the trip, Ebeneezer said: “The trip was an eye-opener because it showed me what level I need to reach to play for an academy and go professional one day.”
One of the most memorable moments for Ebeneezer was watching a professional match. He described it as a source of motivation, saying, “It motivated me to practice harder, set goals, and strive for improvement.” The stadium’s atmosphere was inspiring and fuelled his passion for the game.
Reflecting on the overall experience, Ebeneezer emphasized the trip’s worthiness, stating, “The exposure to academy teams and semi-professional training was invaluable. The lessons I’ve learned have significantly improved me as a player.”
Ebeneezer’s dream is to make it to the professional football world, driven by a deep desire to make his parents proud. He draws motivation from 2 Chronicles 15:7, “But as for you, be strong and do not give up, for your work will be rewarded.”
Lukhanyo wowed audiences with a unique South African skill, the ‘Rakata’, making his mark in Italy. He fondly recalls funny moments, like the price mix-up for grip socks. “One of my memorable moments was when I bought grip socks. My friend (Kgaiso) told me they were R200 because that’s the normal price for football grip socks. After I had bought them, I got a message from my banking app telling me I bought football grip socks for R500 (24 euros).”
Kgaiso cherished bonding over McDonald’s and deep conversations, finding the trip invaluable for his football journey. Kgaiso said: “This trip helped me gain a lot of ball knowledge that can help me improve as a player.”
Both Kgaiso and Lukhanyo aspire to go pro, driven by their passion for the game. Kgaiso seeks to validate his hard work, expressing, “I want to take football to the highest level and know the money invested in me wasn’t a waste.”
Lukhanyo is motivated by family legacy, sharing, “My grandfather (Ta Sammy) had the opportunity to go pro but because of injuries he couldn’t. I want to make my grandfather proud and live this dream with him.”
These four talented boys have not only represented their school but have returned with lessons and inspiration that will undoubtedly shape their bright futures in the world of football. Fourways High School continues to nurture legends both on and off the field, and these young athletes are a testament to the school’s commitment to excellence.
