From Tumbling to Triumph: Fourways Cheerleaders Shine

As you may know, Fourways High School offers cheerleading as one of its sporting codes. However, many people only recognise it from television and movies, and don’t realise just how much more it truly involves.

There are currently two forms of cheerleading: Sideline Cheer and All-Star Cheer. Sideline Cheer is similar to what the spirit masters of our tribes perform at Inter-Tribe events. It includes chants, war cries, dances, and pom-pom routines.

All-Star Cheer, on the other hand, is more intense and physically demanding. It involves tumbling—such as cartwheels, backflips, front flips, and walkovers—along with lifts, tosses, jumps, dances, and, of course, chants and war cries. Each routine is carefully choreographed to an eight-count system and set to custom music, ensuring that stunts are executed with precision and synchronisation.

Cheerleading at Fourways High School was introduced in Term 3 of 2023. The All-Star team currently consists of 24 members, including both boys and girls from Grades 8 to Matric. The cheerleading season runs from Term 4 to Term 2, with pre-season training beginning in Term 3.

Despite being a relatively new team, Fourways cheerleaders have already made a mark. Last year, the team won the GMCA provincial competition and helped Fourways secure the Spirit Cup at the Inter-High event, proving that dedication, skill, and school spirit go hand in hand.
