Spirit in Fourways High School is an important aspect of our school. In March 2025, new leaders of spirit were chosen: Resegofaditswe Boikanyo as spirit master and Karabo Mogopodi as his deputy.
I had the honour of sitting down and speaking to Sego about his position and what being spirit master in Fourways High School means to him. Sego says that, “Being Spirit Master is more than a title; it’s about unity. No matter our differences, once we wear the uniform, we stand as one. Through our shared voice and spirit, we strengthen the bond that unites us under one badge.” He continues by saying that there are 1,000+ students but one badge: Semper Virtute, Always Excellent. “My passion lies not in the title, but in shaping its meaning for those who follow.”
Moving on to the culture Sego wants to create with spirit in Fourways High School, a sense of pride came from him as he said, “I want an inclusive culture where students freely express themselves and embrace others. Too often, fear of judgment holds us back from being ourselves. The past is gone, the future awaits, but now is the time for unity, hope, and pride. I want every student to wear the blazer, walk the halls, and say with pride, ‘I go to Fourways High School.’”
One of the most important things when fostering spirit is making sure all students feel included and appreciated. Sego says, “The best way to make someone feel included is to break them out of their bubble. Spirit brings students together arm in arm, heart to heart, creating bonds through every chant and cry.” “I aim to innovate, from spirit mornings to involving the band and choir, ensuring Fourways’ spirit thrives.”
Sego has goals for spirit and Fourways High School, as he wants to make spirit as important as sports and culture; it’s the heart of it all. His vision includes permanently involving the band and choir and launching social media to showcase our spirit nationwide. The goal unites students and creates a legacy.
Every single student has their favourite war cry. One of those war cries brings us all together and puts us in such a big emotional state of pride and joy. So now, what is the Spirit Master’s favourite war cry? Well, when this question was asked, Sego said, “‘Viva Fourways’ is the war cry that truly gives me chills. If done right, it could send waves through the entire school and beyond.”
We are all ready and excited for what Sego has to give to the school. Let’s make spirit big this year and for the next generation.
