67 years ago on the 9th of August thousands of women marched to the Union Buildings so that women of colour could move around South African soil without any restrictions. Unfortunately, even though democracy has been achieved, there have been even larger battles that South African women have had to conquer.
With all the systems South African women have had to dismantle, I am in awe at how they continue to sing songs of praise from dusk to dawn and still find joy in the most heart-wrenching circumstances. Labelled as victims but consistently rising as victors. Growing as concrete roses when planted in difficult situations.
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. stated: ‘True peace is not merely the absence of tension, but the presence of justice.’ Every single one of us has the platform to pioneer change and create environments where women can be secure and thrive in.
May we recognize that advocating and caring for the well-being of South African women does not start nor end in the month of August.
Wishing all South African women, a victorious Women’s Month.
