Matrics of 2023 – the last hurrah

Each year a batch of poor souls must enter the real world. 2023 introduces the end (or the beginning, depending on how you’d like to look at it) for a whole new group. As a part of this year’s group, I’m here to give you the inside scoop.

Let’s face it, the infamous “school” has got a bad rep. It is known for being the cause of stress and many sleepless nights. For most of us, the end of our schooling career has always seemed like a figment of the far future. I realized recently that I didn’t actually think I’d make it this far in life. I am now on the precipice of the freedom everyone waits 12 years of their life for, and it is in no way what I expected it to be.

High school is not for everyone, we’re all aware of this, yet I can’t help but believe that each matriculant is now looking at their last few months through a lens of sentimentality. We have tons to look forward to: prelims, finals, NBTs, university applications, and job searches. But we also have TONS to look forward to: inter-tribe events, classroom shenanigans, spirit assemblies, the singing of Fourways Call. A year no different, really, except for one major detail: it is our last.

A word of advice to all the youngsters out there who “can’t wait to get out of this place”: enjoy it while you can. I don’t mean to sound sinister… I’d just like to highlight the importance of making the most of your time at Fourways. Look around every once in a while, and appreciate it, your peers, your friends, your teachers.

Make it so that when the time comes, your high school experience is something that is hard to say goodbye to. I know that mine is.
