Every school has its traditions, its colours, and its moments of celebration. But what really sets one school apart from another isn’t simply a winning record. It’s the underlying passion that drives those wins. School spirit is more than enthusiastic chants on derby days or loud applause during assemblies. It’s the feeling of pride students have knowing they’re part of something greater. Something that gives them power. The power to come together and help one another, both on and off the field.
At Fourways High School, spirit has become a very important part of the school culture. The value placed on spirit among learners within the school is inspiring and creates a culture which recognizes their successes in both individual and team-based challenges. Whether during sporting fixtures, assemblies or special events, school spirit reminds every learner that they are part of a community with one purpose.
Every year, this responsibility is entrusted to a new generation of leaders. As the Spirit Master and Deputy Spirit Master, Batho Komane and Lisakhanya Mzozoyana receive the symbolic handover from their predecessors, they inherit more than just a title. They also inherit the responsibility of carrying forward a legacy of unity, enthusiasm and school pride. While many learners see the excitement from the sidelines, few realize the commitment required behind the scenes to create those unforgettable moments.
In an interview, they both described the transition as surprisingly natural. Rather than finding themselves overwhelmed, they explained that they are simply doing what they genuinely love. Although they believe things have gone even better than expected, they are quick to point out that their journey has only just begun, confidently stating, “This is only the beginning, there’s still more to come.”
For them, school spirit is about far more than just making noise. It is about bringing learners together to support one another by celebrating every achievement as one united school. Their vision of the ideal school spirit is one where every learner participates, every voice matters and the entire school stand together as a collective unit. They hope to create an environment where confidence grows naturally as a result of learners knowing that they are surrounded by encouragement, belonging and support.
To bring this vision to life, they have already begun planning ways to strengthen school spirit throughout the year. They hope to introduce more regular spirit mornings while incorporating short spirit sessions during the final minutes of assemblies, allowing learners to leave inspired and energized. Most importantly, they hope to redefine what participation looks like. Spirit has often been associated with a select group of confident learners leading the cheers however they believe true school spirit should be inclusive. Their goal is to encourage even the quietest learners to discover that their support matters just as much as the loudest voices.
Their passion for the role is deeply personal. Lisakhanya and Batho spoke about having older Spirit Masters whom they admired and looked up to during their own school journey. Today, they hope to become role models for other pupils. More than simply leading chants, they want learners to embrace every opportunity that high school offers. One message stood out above all others: they do not simply want to be the voices heard across the field, however they want every learner, especially those who often feel unheard, to realize that these once-in-a-lifetime moments that are found in one’s high school career deserve to be experienced to the fullest.
Supporting this vision is the” Bomb Squad”, a recently developed and dedicated group of learners who work alongside the Spirit Masters. The Bomb Squad serves as an extension of the spirit leadership team. They help energize the crowds, encourage participation, identify learners who may otherwise be overlooked and ensure that the atmosphere remains welcoming and uplifting for everyone. Together, they demonstrate that school spirit is never the responsibility of one person alone but it is built through teamwork.
