Rivals Unite for Pawsitively Amazing Derby Day

The annual derby day between Fourways High School and our long-time rival, Bryanston High School took place on the 25th of May 2024, and once again, the friendly competition took on a charitable twist. Each year, the rivals choose a cause or initiative to donate to, and this year, with thanks to suggestion from Fourways High Staff member, the rivals raised money for the South African Guide Dog Association.

The South African Guide Dog Association is a non-profit organization that provides guide dogs, service dogs, and therapy dogs to people with disabilities. These specially trained dogs help their handlers navigate the world safely and independently, providing them with increased mobility and companionship.

Through various fundraising activities the schools were able to raise a significant amount of money for the cause. Students, teachers, and parents all came together to support this worthy initiative, showcasing the power of unity and community spirit.

Efforts to raise money for this worthy cause did not go unappreciated because worker for the SA Guide Dog Association stated how the money donated will go a long way in helping the people in need of the service dogs. He mentioned how expensive cost of training and nurturing these dogs can be often overlooked.

Not only did the derby day bring out the competitive spirit in both schools, but it also highlighted the importance of giving back to those in need. The success of this year’s fundraising efforts will make a real difference in the lives of individuals with disabilities, gratitude is expressed to the generosity and compassion of all those involved.
