Before the audience applauds, before the actors step onto the stage, and before the lights even switch on, there is a group of students already hard at work turning ideas into reality. Carrying wood, measuring pieces, cutting, building, and assembling large structures, the set construction team works tirelessly behind the scenes to bring every production to life. Although their work is not always seen or recognised during the final performance, set construction remains one of the most important and hardworking extra murals at the school.
For this year’s production of The Addams Family, the set construction team transformed the stage into the dark and mysterious world of the Addams Family. From the iconic mansion to the eerie graveyard, every structure was carefully built by students who spent countless afternoons and evenings bringing the design to life. Their hard work and dedication helped transport the audience straight into the story from the moment the curtain opened.
Led by Mr Clayton, set construction has become far more than simply preparing sets for school productions. The extra mural gives students the opportunity to learn valuable practical skills while also teaching them responsibility, teamwork, and problem solving. Students learn how to safely use tools, work with different materials, measure accurately, and build structures with their own hands. These are skills that many students may never get the opportunity to learn elsewhere, making set construction both meaningful and rewarding.
What makes this extra mural so special is the strong sense of teamwork and family it creates. Every student plays an important role, whether they are building platforms, carrying materials, or assembling large structures. The environment encourages students to support one another and work together towards a common goal, where every piece they build contributes to something much bigger than themselves.
One of the most uplifting parts of set construction is seeing alumni students return year after year to help build the production set. Former students continue giving up their time to work alongside the current team, showing the lasting impact that the extra mural has had on them. Their return reflects the pride, friendships, and memories created through set construction and highlights how meaningful the experience becomes for those involved.
This year’s team was led by captain Juné Vandewesthuisen, alongside vice captains Jaden Haywood and Kylie Bartleson, who are also part of the 2026 matric group. Through their leadership, dedication, and positive attitude, the team remained motivated throughout the long building process. Their commitment helped guide the group and played a major role in bringing the set to life.
