The Face of FHS: A Conversation with Ms Ntithe

As students, teachers, and staff members rush in and out of the school reception area daily, one person remains a constant presence – the school receptionist. Behind the desk, answering phone calls, directing visitors, and handling various inquiries, the receptionist plays a crucial role in the smooth operation of the school. In an exclusive interview, we sat down with, Ms Hilda Nthite to gain insight into the life of a school receptionist.

Having been a receptionist at Fourways High School for over three years, Ms Nthite shared some of the challenges and joys of her role. She emphasized the importance of treating her with respect and understanding the weight of responsibility that comes with being the face of the school. Despite misconceptions that her job is easy or requires little effort, the receptionist highlighted the psychological trauma that can come with the role. Ms H. Nthite stated: “I make my role seem effortless, which makes people believe there is not enough work in reception or that all you need you need to do is look pretty and do nothing. Which is not the case!’’

One memorable moment she shared was receiving a bunch of flowers from a student who was apologizing for her behaviour.  She also mentioned making people smile is something that makes her look forward to waking up and coming to school the next morning.

When asked about handling difficult situations, Ms Nthite stressed the importance of remaining calm and involving management only when necessary. She shared advice for students to respect themselves and understand that their behavior now shapes the adults they will become in the future.

On a lighter note, Ms Nthite shared interesting facts about herself that people may not know, including her deep respect for others, her ability to make things seem effortless, and her love for seeing people happy. As the interview came to an end, it was clear that behind the desk, Ms Nthite is not just a person who answers phones and directs visitors, but a caring individual who plays a significant role in the school community.
